Workload Policy Rule parameters enable you to define rules to apply to the jobs in the Workload Policy for controlling the job load during specific periods of time. For example, you can define rules that limit jobs according to their usage of resources or limit the number of jobs that can run concurrently.
The following examples display Rule parameters for a local Workload Policy and a global Workload Policy. The local Workload Policy contains three rules (one of each type) and the global Workload Policy contains two rules.

The following tables list the parameters that are available in each rule that you define. Some of the parameters are common to all types of rules, while others depend on the type of Workload Policy and the type of rule.
Table 155f Rule parameters
Parameter |
Description |
---|---|
RULE TYPE |
The type of rule to apply to jobs in the Workload Policy. The following rule types are available:
|
PERIOD TYPE |
The type of scheduling to use for defining the time periods when the Workload Policy rule is in effect. Options range from 1 to 6. Descriptions of these options appear at the top of the Rule Parameters section. Alternatively, enter ? to open a window that lists the range of options and enables you to choose one. Additional scheduling parameters depend on your selection of PERIOD TYPE. |
DESCRIPTION |
An optional free-text description of the Workload Policy rule, to clarify its purpose. This description is used to identify the Workload Policy rule on the Why screen (3.?). |
RESOURCE NAME |
(Type R only) The name of the resource to limit. For the specified resource to limit a job, it must be defined in the job schedule (as discussed in Runtime Scheduling Parameters) and in the IOA Conditions/Resources Screen (Screen 4). |
LIMIT |
This parameter depends on the type of rule:
|
POSTPONE WHILE JOBS OF THE FOLLOWING WORKLOADS ARE EXECUTING |
(Local Workload Policy only, Type S only) A list of names of Workload Policies that must not have jobs executing, to allow execution of jobs of the current local Workload Policy. If jobs of any of the listed Workload Policies are executing, jobs of the current Workload Policy are blocked from running. Note that this is a one-way restriction. For example: The current Workload Policy POLICYA has a rule of Type S that lists Workload Policies POLICYB and POLICYC. Jobs of POLICYA cannot execute while jobs of POLICYB or POLICYC are executing. |
WHEN LOAD-INDEX |
(Local Workload Policy only) Name of a Load-Index that must reach a specified threshold level (next parameter) for the Workload Policy rule to be enforced. For more information about Load-Indexes, see Using Load-Indexes in workload optimization. |
AT LEVEL... |
(Local Workload Policy only) A threshold load level that the Load-Index (previous parameter) must reach for the Workload Policy rule to be enforced. Valid values: LOW, MEDIUM, HIGH, V-HIGH (very high), and CRITICAL Note that this is a threshold level, so all levels above it are included. For example, if this parameter is set to MEDIUM, the limit is enforced when the Load-Index reaches MEDIUM, HIGH, V-HIGH, or CRITICAL. For more information about the importance of the order of multiple rules that are associated with the same Load-Index, see Significance of the order of rules associated with a Load-Index. |
BYPASS LIMIT FOR JOBS WITH mmm MINUTES OR LESS BEFORE DUE IN |
(Local Workload Policy only) Apply a bypass to the Workload Policy rule if the jobs included in the Workload Policy are too close to their DUE-IN time (that is, when only the specified number of minutes, or less, are left until DUE-IN time). This bypass enables you to allow urgent jobs to run, ignoring the limit set by the policy rule. For example, the bypass limit is set to 5 minutes. In this case, a bypass is applied (and the Workload Policy rule is ignored) only if 5 minutes or less are left until DUE-IN time. Otherwise, the rule is implemented as defined. |
