Daily job, utilities and online environment

BMC recommends that the Control-M/Tape utilities, the Daily procedure, and the Control-M/Tape Online facility, be run in the MVS system in which Control-M/Tape was installed, and not in each system.

The New Day procedure (CTTDAY) must run only on one MVS system and not on each MVS system that shares the same Media database. Only the following two steps of the New Day procedure should be run on each MVS system:

  1. Reloading the scheduled Control-M/Tape rules into memory.
  2. Checking that Control-M/Tape real time environment is active.

The Control‑M/Tape UNTIL MVS CATALOG retention criterion can be used in either of the following circumstances:

If all the systems that share Control‑M/Tape do not share all the operating system catalogs, the CTTRTM utility might search the wrong catalog and therefore prematurely expire a data set. The same situation can occur when running the CTTVTM utility, which may prematurely move a volume out of a vault.

Therefore, if all systems that share Control‑M/Tape do not share all the operating system catalogs, the CTTDAY Control‑M/Tape daily job must be tailored. Appropriate INCLUDE statements should be added to the steps of the daily job that runs the retention management utility (CTTRTM) and the vaulting management utility (CTTVTM). The INCLUDE statements should limit the processing of these utilities only to data sets that are cataloged in the operating system catalogs of the system in which the daily job is executed.

The CTTRTM and CTTVTM utilities must be run on a daily basis in the remaining systems. Every job that runs these utilities must be tailored to contain the appropriate INCLUDE statements in it, to ensure that the Control‑M/Tape utilities process only the data sets of the system that is running the job.
