Under JES3, output classes are divided into the following types:

• non‑held class
• held external writer class (HOLD=EXTWTR)
• held TSO class (HOLD=TSO)

The characteristics of the class are defined in the JES3 INISHDECK, and have no connection with, or no relation to, the HOLD=YES or HOLD=NO expression in the JCL.

Control‑D can read outputs from all these types of output classes. Consider the following alternatives:

• If it is necessary to read only held TSO classes, Control‑D should run under TSO batch using the supplied procedure CONTRLD3. Due to JES3 restrictions, Control‑D running under TSO cannot read outputs from external writer sysouts.
• If Control‑D is running under native mode, meaning, not under TSO, it is possible to read the output from non‑held classes and held external writer classes, but not from held TSO classes.

In general, BMC recommends that decollation of held outputs under JES3 be avoided, unless there is no alternative.

The two methods of running the Control‑D monitor under JES3 are described below.
