Understanding the SNMP Trap Fields Format

This topic explains the SNMP trap fields format generated by the DO SNMP and SHOUT to U-S commands, and is intended for the administrator setting up the SNMP listener.

The figure below shows an example SNMP trap message taken by a sniffer trace. In this example:

• The Generic trap field is set to 6 (Enterprise specific)
• The Enterprise field of the message is set to 1.3.6.1.4.1.954.512 and is defined as follows:

  1.3.6.1.4.1 - The IANA-registered Private Enterprise

  954 - The vendor (BMC)

  512 - Application (Control‑M or Control‑O)

• The Specific trap field is set to 3. BMC defines the values of the Specific trap field as follows:

  3 - Regular

  2 - Urgent

  1 - Very Urgent

• The three SNMP Value fields are defined as follows:

  Control-O - The Application name (either Control‑M or Control‑O)

  061TROLO - The Monitor name

  CICSPROD ENDED S878 U000 RC08 - The message text itself as it is coded in the MESSAGE field of the DO SNMP panel.
