Well designed indexes can enable users to retrieve important information without viewing the report itself. For example, if a bond portfolio report with one bond per page contains a redemption date field, indexing that field produces a sorted list of all bond redemption dates which can be displayed in the Values of Index panel, without retrieving the report.
