The Control-M Recovery Facility

Whenever the Control-M monitor terminates, regardless whether the termination is normal or abnormal, Control-M performs a synchronization of the job data in memory with the disk copy kept in the CKP file. However, in rare cases where Control-M is unable to perform the synchronization, some of the jobs might remain in the CKP file in an ambiguous status. When Control-M is restarted, these jobs must be analyzed to clarify their actual status. In a CTMPLEX environment, a similar result might occur whenever a monitor (whether Global or Local) terminates abnormally or when there is a Coupling Facility failure (where the Local monitor activities cannot be passed to the Global monitor and saved in the Active Jobs File).

When Control-M detects an abnormal Control-M monitor termination, which prevents job information synchronization, or a similar situation in a CTMPLEX environment, Control-M automatically goes into "Recovery Mode." In this mode, Control-M extracts information about the jobs from the IOA LOG to determine the exact status of the jobs.

If the job status can be determined from the IOA LOG, the Control-M Recovery Mode processing sets the appropriate status. When Control-M restarts, the job processing continues without any need for manual intervention.

If the job status cannot be determined from the IOA LOG, to avoid the possibility of a duplicate submission or a DO FORCEJOB execution, the Control-M Recovery Mode processing puts the job into HOLD status and issues an appropriate message (see messages CTM5B3W and CTM5B4W in the INCONTROL for z/OS Messages Manual). These actions give the customer the opportunity to clarify the status of each of the jobs and perform the appropriate actions manually.

The installation parameters that control the Control-M Recovery Mode processing are located in the RECOVERY section of the CTMPARM parameters member. For more information about the parameters, see the RECOVERY section in Chapter 2, Customizing Control-M, in the INCONTROL for z/OS Installation Guide: Customizing.
