Automatic recovery of the CTMPLEX Facility after Coupling Facility failures

If automatic recovery of CTMPLEX is inactive, then in the case of Coupling Facility failures or other problems that prevent Control-M from working in CTMPLEX mode, the following occurs:

To resume CTMPLEX processing (to return to CTMPLEX mode), the operator should issue the STARTPLEX operator command. As the result of this command, the Control-M monitor loads CTMPLEX resources and definitions, connects to the Coupling Facility, and becomes a Control-M Global monitor. After this, the operator may start Local monitors.

The CTMPLEX Automatic Recovery function automatically performs the actions mentioned above (reactivating CTMPLEX and restarting Local monitors), without any need for operator intervention. Automatic Recovery is controlled by the RECOVERT and RECOVERM CTMPLEX installation parameters.

When Automatic Recovery is activated (the RECOVERT installation parameter is not set to zero), in the case of Coupling Facility errors (or other failures preventing Control-M from using CTMPLEX), the Global monitor releases all CTMPLEX resources and continues working as a regular (standalone) Control-M monitor. Local monitors pause and wait for CTMPLEX to be reactivated.

From time to time, in accordance with the value of the RECOVERT installation parameter that defines the interval between attempts, the Global monitor tries to recover CTMPLEX. This means that the Global monitor tries to build a CTMPLEX environment, connect to Coupling Facility, allocate and populate new Coupling Facility structures, and so on. New Coupling Facility structures may be allocated in another Coupling Facility and have characteristics such as when the Global monitor uses the current CTMPLEX parameters member and active CFRM policies. The Global monitor may try several attempts to recover CTMPLEX. The maximum number of attempts is set by the RECOVERM installation parameter in the CTMPLEX parameters member.

If the Global monitor succeeds in recovering CTMPLEX, then the Global monitor frees Local monitors by sending them an order to resume operation). If the Global monitor does not successfully resume CTMPLEX within the maximum number of attempts allowed the RECOVERM installation parameter in the CTMPLEX parameters member), then it orders Local monitors to shut down.
