The MVS System Logger is a comprehensive facility for handling communication across the Sysplex. The System Logger is meant to be treated as a black box, providing automatic recovery support if the system, Sysplex, or Coupling Facility structure fails. The z/OS MVS Assembler Services Guide discusses in detail the various components that can fail. Among the failures discussed are:

• MVS system failure
• system logger address space failure
• coupling facility (CF) structure failure
• log stream or staging data set filling up
• damaged log stream
• DASD I/O error

The system logger and MVS initiate automatic recovery of many or most of the failures. It is recommended for users to read this section before using the system logger for communication between CMEM and Control-M.

Depending on the particular failure, the interface between CMEM and Control-M will either:

• retry the request
• rebuild the system logger environment (re-connect) and retry the request
• disable the CMEM facility

For example, the following errors cause the interface to reconnect to the system logger address space:

• severe XES error (error code 802)
• stream token not valid (error code 806)
• stream token not valid–expired (error code 82D)
• rebuild in progress (error code 861)
• no connectivity (error code 864)
• staging data set being formatted (error code 868)
• system logger address space initializing (error code 891)
