Business challenge
Data centers must meet performance objectives and increase productivity in both the traditional mainframe and parallel sysplex environments. They need to measure selected areas of system activity and present the data in SMF records, printed reports and online displays. They require a single, powerful online reporting system that collects a broad range of data on a variety of system activities and offers compatibility with other related products.

Single System Image
Single system image provides for all resources within your z/OS and OS/390 enterprise. It allows you to analyze data from a whole new perspective, simply by displaying a summary view. Each row in a summary view represents a group of resources, such as:
- Started tasks
- Jobs in a particular service class
- System requests for a shared DASD device
- Cache activity to storage directors
- OS/390 images within a parallel sysplex, or within all parallel sysplexes, on a 3270 display
Extensive data collection
CMF MONITOR has an extractor that collects data for both the batch reports and the online interfaces. The batch reports and online interfaces are comparable with RMF. CMF MONITOR also gathers and saves data for:
- TSO activity
- DASD head movement
- I/O activity by workload
- ASM activity
- LPA mapping
Online features
The online component uses a customizable window interface for displaying performance information. This component is a powerful tool that allows you to control the appearance and content of each view. You can split the screen space to allow more than one view to be displayed at a time with data from different OS/390 images. You can view different areas of system performance at once, and you can view historical and current data side by side. You can customize each view online.
CMF MONITOR makes it easy to navigate through screens and system information. It uses hyperlinks that you can modify to control which view or command is initiated by a hyperlink.
The comprehensive help system gives an explanation of the various data items displayed. It includes pop-up menus that describe fields, such as the average number of milliseconds that an I/O request was delayed. It even suggests reasons for problems.
Workload License Migration and Monitor Facility (WLMF)
Before you move to Workload License Charge (WLC), you need to have as much information as possible on the new environment. The WLMF manages and monitors WLC. It provides an early warning system to alert you before the workload capacity is being met or exceeded.
New reports
CMF MONITOR provides new and enhanced reports:
- The HTTP Server report is a combination report that requires the generation of SMF 103 records. It provides summary and detail information for each HTTP Server.
- The Lotus Domino report (requires SMF 108 records) displays global server activity data such as the number of users connected and number of mailboxes. It also displays transaction and port activity such as all the ports a particular server is listening to and the activity in the form of bytes sent or received as well as the associated sessions.
Hardware and software requirements
- The enhanced CPU Utilization report requires SMF 70 CPU records from OS/390 1.2 and higher. The new views support OS/390 2.8 and higher.
- The HTTP Server report requires OS/390 2.10 and SMF 103 records from the 5.3 version of the server.
- The Lotus Domino server report requires OS/390 2.10 and SMF 108 records from the 5.02 version of the server.
- For VTAM/EXCP access, MAINVIEW Alternate Access requires TSO/E 2.1 or higher and VTAM 2.2 or higher for VTAM support

MAINVIEW for Infrastructure Management
MAINVIEW for Infrastructure Management monitors, manages, and automates enterprise server environments. It provides a wide array of online and historical views to manage your infrastructure across an unlimited number of z/OS, OS/390, UNIX System Services, or parallel sysplex environments.
