Business challenge
z/OS storage managers face the challenge of ensuring maximum availability while controlling costs. The data that is processed is the most critical resource to any application. Storage managers must ensure that required data sets are available on the proper media, verify that critical data sets are performing properly, and control storage management resources. The expertise required to manage a wide range of storage technologies compounds this challenge.
The complexity of managing such a wide variety of storage entities, including DFSMS, DFSMShsm and RAID technologies, introduces a number of potential failure points.
BMC Software solution
The BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation product provides one central location from which to control the automation of z/OS storage enterprise. With BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation, you can monitor storage resources and receive alerts regarding any potential problem across multiple MVS images and LPARs. The solution offers powerful automation tools that include scheduling, multi-level problem resolution, and a powerful rule-based automation definition facility. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation manages a wide range of storage entities including, DFSMS, DFSMShsm, Tivoli Storage Manager, RAID devices, and other z/OS resources.
BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation reduces the time required for managing z/OS storage. Automated, predefined solutions for critical storage resources provide a quick way to gain control of the enterprise. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation includes a powerful rule-based technology by which automation can be quickly built and implemented without the need for complex scripting.
When you use BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation with other BMC MAINVIEW SRM solutions, users are notified of storage capacity and performance-related exceptions. BMC MAINVIEW SRM generates over 100 alarms related to data set performance, volume capacity, RAID devices, and key applications (accounts). These alarms are automatically sent to BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation, where automated actions and alert management can be executed.
Sysplex support
BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation supports multiple LPARs and images in Sysplex and non-Sysplex environments. It sends exception messages and initiates automation to give the storage manager complete control of the storage enterprise.
Predefined automation solutions
Several predefined solutions are included in BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation to meet critical storage management concerns. You can enable system events to
> Evaluate DFSMShsm for exception conditions
> Initiate compression for IBM® RVA devices based on net capacity load thresholds
> Automate Tivoli Storage Manager processes
> Automate DFSMShsm MWE thresholds
> Process exceptions for DFSMS, enterprise storage devices, and virtual tape
> Handle DFSMShsm log management
> Delete duplicate DFSMShsm requests
> Analyze DFSMShsm for any held resources and automatically release them
Monitoring capability for multiple storage resources
Using BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation, you can define automation solutions for a variety of storage events. You can define solutions to initiate sophisticated automation or simple event management.
Scheduling and management
With BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation, you can define schedules to execute critical tasks or processes. You can build relationships and availability schedules between critical jobs and started tasks. BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation ensures that these tasks are started and stopped at scheduled times and in the proper order. If a task fails during scheduled availability times, BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation automatically restarts the task.
Automation of tasks can be based on exception events or specific times. In the rules processor, you can designate tasks that should be executed on a periodic basis or generate an exception based on a review of storage events from a variety of sources, including the z/OS systems console.
BMC MAINVIEW SRM Automation provides a central location from which to automate the your z/OS storage enterprise. Automated, predefined solutions for critical storage resources provide a quick way to gain control of the enterprise and reduce the time you spend managing storage.AutomationCopyright 2006 BMC Software, Inc., as an unpublished work.
